In this Advancement Activity we will identify Core Beliefs to help increase our self-awareness.  The inner operating system, as mentioned in the previous lesson, is the set of stories about ourselves that guide our behaviors. These thoughts about ourselves can present as both negative and positive. Let’s begin with an exercise that will increase your awareness.

  1. On a sheet of paper or your journal, draw the layout above.

  2. On the left side, write out positive core beliefs that come to mind. For example “I am a helpful person”, “I am a hard working person”.

  3. Challenge yourself further. On the right side of your paper or journal write the inner critic core beliefs that come to mind. For example “I am not very creative”, “I am lazy”.

You will see in this activity that we are a combination of positive and negative core beliefs. Reflect for a moment on where these ideas of ourselves come from.  Make notes or journal further about what you discover.

This practice of acknowledging and embracing the paradox of our core beliefs helps us to make sense of who we think we are, who we actually are, and the potential to change our narratives of self. We will return to these core beliefs in future exercises. As you are going through this guide, feel free to add to this diagram throughout the lessons as more core beliefs come to mind.
